New Jersey Sets in Place Optometry-Focused Patient Access Law

Based in the Boston area, Yasemin Dalgali has a leadership role in Augmenix, Inc., as the director of health economics and reimbursement. As a result, Yasemin Dalgali has a strong interest in patient access issues and stays current on the latest trends and policy developments in the field.

Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey recently signed a new patient access law for his state. Focused on optometry, it prevents health insurance companies from making conditional requirements that force optometrists to take part in vision care plans in order to merit inclusion in the panel of carrier providers.

The president of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians said this bill will help ensure the “delivery of quality health care” statewide. Given the expanding role of optometry within healthcare, the Dental and Optometric Care Access Act (HR 1606) will provide doctors with greater discretion in how they interact with vision plans. A related goal is to tie this in with the national level HR 1606 Dental and Optometric Care Access Act, which is up for legislative consideration in Washington D.C.
